William Billings' document of deputization to swear in citizens to quell an anti-Chinese riot in Olympia, Washington Territory, 1886.

This collection consists of a handwritten document to swear in prominent citizens of Olympia to quell riots against the Chinese. The handwriting begins neatly but becomes increasingly illegible, apparently as the threat of the riot worsens and the need for additional deputies becomes more acute. The document was folded and inscribed "Sheriff of Thurston County Wash Ty, Appointment and qualification of deputy sheriffs". It is "Dated at Olympia, W.T., February 9, 1886." The document of deputization is stamped "State Capitol Museum" at the top of the page. There is a photocopy of a letter dated July 16, 1969 from Blanche Billings Mahlberg, daughter of William Billings to Delbert J. McBride, curator, State Capitol Museum, Olympia, in thanks for a photocopy of the document of deputization. There are two summary sheets included: one is an original typewritten glued to the top of the document; one is a photocopy laid in.
